Tantus Amsterdam Dildo Review

Tantus Amsterdam Dildo Review, June 2021

I was kindly sent the Amsterdam dildo from tantus.inc for an honest review.

In case it wasn’t already clear, I have a passion for unique and unusual sex toys. Whether it be innovative technology or unusual design, if a product stands out from the crowd, I generally want to try it.

In this regard, Tantus has really been spoiling me lately; first with the arrival of the Tantus Bound (A dildo designed to look like a penis bound tight in rope bondage.) and now the Amsterdam dildo, which is designed to look like the famous traffic barriers in Amsterdam (also known as Amsterdammertjes).

This is one reason I love and support Tantus. Not only do they sell high-quality, body-safe sex toys, they also make sure they have a design to appeal to most tastes including realistic, non-realistic, and artistic creations.

Product Information

Before I discuss the product itself, I thought it important to mention that Tantus sell the Amsterdam in two different sizes.

There is a huge size difference between these two dildos (also referred to as “Amsterdam” and “Amsterdam small” on the Tantus website) so I recommend paying close attention during purchase, to avoid disappointment.

The standard Amsterdam is an incredibly large dildo, best suited to advanced size kings/queens. Despite its name, the Amsterdam small is closer to your average sized dildo. It is the small version that I am reviewing here today.

The Amsterdam is a reasonably textured dildo created from Tantus’ premium silicone.

This high quality silicone is not only odourless, but virtually non-porous too, so it can be cleaned thoroughly and even sterilized between uses (more on this later).

As soon as I removed the Amsterdam from its packaging, I noticed the silicone firmness felt different from almost every other Tantus dildo I had tried before.

I think the best way to describe Amsterdam would be to imagine one of Tantus’ dual density (o2) dildos with the firm core removed. It is as though Tantus has made a single-density dildo using the softer silicone they usually reserve for coating their dual-density dildos.

I have only tried one other Tantus dildo with a similar softness; the Tantus Pack and Play No 1. Tantus single-density dildos are usually quite firm, but the Amsterdam is gloriously squishy and flexible. As a huge fan of squishy dildos, I was absolutely thrilled to discover this.

I whipped out my trusty tape measure and took some measurements. The Amsterdam (small) measures 6.5 inches in usable length (7 inches total length) and has a circumference of 4.5 inches around the shaft.

The straight shaft has a uniform circumference (it doesn’t swell or narrow at any point) which makes it most suitable for use as a thrusting dildo. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that the Amsterdam is a textured dildo. It comes with three raised cross shapes down the length of the shaft and a raised ridge circling the tip, similar to a coronal ridge.

The Amsterdam also comes with Tantus’ new, teardrop shaped base. This flared base makes the Amsterdam safe to use for anal penetration and due to its unique shape, allows your partner to see which way the toy is facing when using it on you. I think this new base design is an improvement on the round base design.

My Experience With The Tantus Amsterdam

The Amsterdam (small) is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a large dildo. In fact, I would say that its dimensions place it bang smack in the middle of the ‘average’ category for both length and circumference.

Due to its unexceptional size and its softer, squishy silicone (my favourite kind of silicone) I believed that the Amsterdam would please me thoroughly, earning a promotion to my favourites drawer. Sadly this didn’t happen.

During my sessions with the Amsterdam, I kept experiencing this scratchy, nipping sensation as I inserted the dildo into my vagina.

Initially, I thought this sensation was caused by friction, so I applied more lubricant. At one point I even tried a thicker, gel-like lubricant but this scratchy sensation persisted.

I soon realised that it was the raised and defined edges of the three crosses, scraping against my entrance as I moved the Amsterdam in and out.

Texture has always been a bug-bear of mine. For some reason (maybe because I have fibromyalgia and tend to be overly sensitive anyway) I find that texture just irritates me, causing discomfort more often than not. I generally prefer a smooth, streamlined penetration, but even I was surprised.

The Amsterdam doesn’t look like a highly textured dildo. The three crosses are definitely raised from the surface, but not dramatically and the softer silicone probably does help to soften the texture overall.

I eventually came to the conclusion that the scratching sensation happened because the textured crosses have defined/sharp edges. I can handle rolling, rounded, gradual texture patterns because they feel gentler overall. The strictly defined edge to the cross texture is just too much for me.

This scratchy sensation was too uncomfortable against the anterior wall of my vagina, but I soon mastered a technique that allowed me to play comfortably with the Amsterdam. I simply rotated it often, so that the crosses faced the side walls, or bottom wall of my vagina. Doing this allowed me to enjoy, for a brief time, the gloriously squishy silicone as it conformed to my body.

This was one aspect of the Amsterdam that I did really enjoy. If I slowed right down, I also found that the crosses didn’t scrape so much and instead seemed to brush and tickle more. However, I couldn’t play with the Amsterdam for too long, or thrust too fast, before the sensations transferred from pleasurable to uncomfortable again.

His Experience With The Tantus Amsterdam

Just to confuse matters even more, my partner actually really enjoyed the Amsterdam. I think this is the first time we have had opposite experiences with the same toy. During use, he mentioned that he could definitely feel the cross texture, but the silicone was soft enough that it did not feel overpowering or scratchy to him.

He commented that the texture produced a brushing, tickling sensation; a sensation he actually really enjoyed, especially when it was brushing over his prostate. The size and shape was almost perfect for him too, with the only slight downside being that the Amsterdam has a very rounded tip. Because the tip doesn’t taper, insertion can be fiddly, but this was a very minor issue for him.

Like me, he also really liked the softer silicone, commenting that it felt more comfortable, conformed to his body better and didn’t feel nearly as ‘pokey’ as some dildos can. Overall, he really liked the Amsterdam and would use it again for anal penetration. Thankfully it has that nice flared base, so I shall enjoy slipping it into my strap-on harnesses in future.

Cleaning And Care

The Amsterdam is made from a super high quality silicone. It is odourless, virtually non-porous and very stable. This means it should last a lifetime with proper care.

During use, you can use water based and oil based lubricants, but I recommend doing a patch test if you prefer to use silicone lubricant. After use, you can clean the Amsterdam with hot, soapy water or use a sex toy cleaner spray. A great advantage to using Tantus products is that they can often be sterilized, either with a 10% bleach solution (rinse well) or boiled (don’t let the dildo touch the sides of the pan).

The Amsterdam does take a few seconds longer to clean than most dildos because lubricant and body fluids do tend to stick in the crevasses of the cross texture. This dildo doesn’t come with a storage pouch, but I recommend purchasing one because the silicone is a lint magnet. Other than that, Amsterdam is simple to keep clean and safe.

Summary

There were many things about the Amsterdam that pleased me, such as the material quality and overall aesthetics.

I was also thrilled to discover that Tantus had created a true, super-soft silicone dildo, for those of us who appreciate a softer, squishier penetration.

I do hope that Tantus create more of these super-soft dildos in the future and if I find one with less texture, I shall be purchasing it. That’s the thing; I loved almost everything about the Amsterdam except that pesky texture.

Of course, my issues with the Amsterdam came down to personal taste. If my partners experience tells me anything, it’s that there will be people who really enjoy this dildo.

I imagine that the Amsterdam will suit those who have opposite needs to me; those who love texture.

If you seek a noticeable brushing, rumbling sensation around the entrance to your vagina/anus, the Amsterdam would be a fantastic choice. If, like me, you prefer a smoother penetration, I recommend taking a look at the Tantus Mikey, or Tantus Adam instead.
