Lelo Smart Wand Medium Review

Lelo Smart Wand Medium Review, June 2021

I was kindly sent the Lelo Smart Wand (Medium) from here.

Product Information

Material

The Lelo Smart Wand is made from ABS Plastic and this is coated in a luxury, silky soft, body safe silicone. You can purchase the wand in 3 different colour options. Black, purple and white. The Wand is rigid, but it does have a reasonably flexible neck which means extra comfort during use, (Especially if you like to add some pressure). The silicone coating is phthalate free and feels silky soft, which makes for a gentler, more luxurious feel when you brush the wand over your body.

Dimensions

The Smart Wand measures approx 9 inches in total length from tip to tail and the circumference at the head of the toy measures 5.25 inches. This girth narrows to a slimline 2.75 inches around the thinnest portion at the centre of the handle, before widening again to 3.6 inches at the base. In the words of Lelo, this makes the wand very ‘ergonomic’ and comfortable to grasp onto during use. The Wand weighs a lightweight 155g which means it should not be too hard on your arms during prolonged sessions.

Smart Wand Features

Rechargeable

The Smart Wand is a rechargeable vibrator, so you do not have to worry about cables getting in the way or stocking up on batteries before purchase. It comes with a mains charger only, and requires just 2 hours for an initial full charge. A full charge will give you approximately 2 hours of play time, depending on the setting you use (This time is reduced if you use the wand on high speed, for example.)

Memory Function

The Lelo Smart Wand comes with a memory function, which means that the next time you switch the vibrator on, it will start on the same pattern/speed setting that you had set it to before switching it off last time. This is great for people who have a favourite setting and do not deviate from it, but can be a little annoying for people who like to start on a different setting first, before switching to another to finish.

Travel Lock

This vibrator does come with a travel lock, which allows you to lock the vibrations so that it cannot be accidentally knocked and turned on while in luggage or in your underwear drawer. To lock the Smart Wand, simply hold down the plus and minus buttons at the same time for 5 seconds (Until the lights go out) and your Smart Wand will be locked. You repeat the same process to unlock the Smart Wand.

Sound

It is reasonably quiet,. The sound can generally be muffled underneath a duvet and not heard through a closed door. It does give off some sound though and I would recommend some light background noise if you need to be completely discreet.

Other Features

Finally, it is great to know that, unlike most other wands, the Lelo Smart Wand comes with 8 different vibration patterns  and is 100% waterproof so it can be enjoyed in the bath or shower.

SenseTouch Mode

I had to have a skim through the manual to familiarise myself with all the different options. Switching it on and pressing buttons is all fine and well, but you may miss out on some of the best features of the Smart Wand, like the SenseTouch

To activate SenseTouch, you need to press and hold down the Smart Wands central button (The one that looks like an eye.) for 3 or 4 seconds, until you see the LED lights begin to flash or pulse. The lights will continue to pulse while you are in SenseTouch mode.

Once SenseTouch has been activated, the Smart Wand will fall into a default, low gentle rumble and the vibrations will remain low until you hold the tip of the wand against your skin.

At this point, the vibrations will ramp up to the highest setting over a period of 2 to 3 seconds.

You can use the plus and minus buttons to set your top speed if the default high speed is too much and continue to use the SenseTouch technology while the Wand ramps up to your set top speed.

When you remove the head of the wand from your body, the vibrations will once again fall to a low, gentle rumble. Please note that if you leave it in SenseTouch mode for more than one minute without touching the vibrator to your skin, the Smart Wand will turn off, to conserve battery life.

I believe the SenseTouch mode is designed to conserve battery life and it does come in handy if you like to stop stimulation for whatever reason (Edging, breaks between orgasms, stopping to grab more lube or other sex toys) allowing you to continue where you left off without having to fiddle around switching the toy on and off with lubey hands.

For the most part, I find the SenseTouch technology works very well, but it is not perfect and it can get confused. Take, for example, the time I tried to use the Smart Wand, in SenseTouch mode, whilst also using one of my favourite dildos. I had the dildo inserted with the base protruding and I was using the wand against my clit. Every time the head of the wand came into contact with the base of the dildo, the power would ramp down.

I can only guess as to why this happened, but I am reasonably sure that the SenseTouch sensors detect heat and pressure together. The reason I assume this is because I tested the SenseTouch mode by holding the head of the Smart Wand against every cold surface possible and I get no reaction, no ramping up of power, even though there was pressure applied. However, applying it to warm skin causes an immediate reaction and ramp up of power.

Therefore, I assume when the Wands head made contact with the base of the dildo protruding from my vagina, it confused the sensors (Half of the wands head was against my warm skin and the other half against the cold, firm base of the dildo) I think this caused the Sensors to get confused and ramp down.  Of course, my theory is not proven and the fact that the SenseTouch reacts to such things as warm water, cold water and the side of my warm PC, but not a hair-dryer, is a little baffling!

Vibration Settings

The Smart Wand comes with 8 different vibration modes or settings and you can change the power levels within each mode so that they vibrate as fast or as slow as you prefer by using the plus and minus buttons.

To activate the settings, simply turn on the Smart Wand using the plus button and then use the central button to cycle through these 8 different settings:

  • Mode 1: Continuous vibration speed
  • Mode 2: Slow Pulse
  • Mode 3: Medium Pulse
  • Mode 4: Fast Pulse
  • Mode 5: Build, drop, build, drop
  • Mode 6: Slow wave building up and falling down and building again
  • Mode 7: Medium wave
  • Mode 8: Completely random (You never know what to expect as this vibration pattern isn’t set. You get some really high level vibrations mixed with low and medium speeds at random times. This is a great setting for teasing yourself.)

In Use

Despite all the fancy technology, incredible features and luxury presentation, the Smart Wand (medium) is not one of my favourite vibrators for one big reason. It cannot bring me to orgasm easily at all.

Over the last 5 uses it has not given me a single orgasm, only getting me close once (I had to work hard at that too.) Now, don’t get me wrong, this wand has a reasonable amount of power.

It is not the strongest vibrator I have ever had the pleasure to use (Love you Lovehoney Deluxe Wand has a larger head, and a larger surface area than the Lelo Smart Wand does, yet that wand never, ever fails me because it comes with thumping, rumbling vibrations that travel so deeply into my clitoral tissue that orgasm will come whether I want it to or not.

On top of all of this, the Lelo Smart Wand suffers from dampened vibrations. It vibrates at a high frequency when you switch it on, but as soon as you apply pressure to the head of this vibrator, that power and frequency drop to a lower level, making it pretty much useless considering I need more ‘oomph’ from my vibrators. Disappointing.

Cleaning And Care

The Lelo Smart Wand is completely waterproof, so it is very simple to clean using some hot running water and an antibacterial soap or sex toy cleaner. Lelo silicone, unlike a lot of other silicones, does not attract dust or lint, which is always a bonus, and it comes with a storage pouch to keep it clean and protected between uses.

The packaging (box) that the wand arrives in is also great for long term storage. You may well need to use some lubricant with this vibrator, but I recommend sticking to water based lubricants, as silicone or oil based lubes could damage the silicone skin on the wand. Best to be safe than sorry.

Summary

The Lelo Smart Wand is a work of art. It is an absolutely stunning, luxurious vibrator and it comes with many nifty features that are not found on many other wands, but all of this is pretty pointless to me if the vibrator cannot do the one thing I intend to use it for.

The Lelo Smart Wand (Medium) often failed to give me orgasms. I would honestly suggest avoiding this wand. Save up a few more pennies and purchasing the large wand instead. Alternatively,  if you do not enjoy patterns and can live without the extra features on the Lelo wands, then take a look at the Lovehoney Deluxe Wand instead. The Lelo large wand often gets fantastic reviews and I imagine with a larger motor it will come with much stronger vibrations too.
