Explosive by Beth Kery was kindly sent to me from Lovehoney for an impartial review and this book is Lovehoney’s January feature novel in their Book of the Month Club. I love erotic fiction, but I love it more when it comes with some suspense, some mystery and a strong story. After reading the blurb for Explosive, I was really intrigued. It sounded like my kind of tale.
Dr Sophie Gable didn’t expect her peaceful getaway to be shattered by the arrival of the half dazed, dead-sexy Thomas Nicasio. An ex-Navy explosives specialist, Thomas has never felt this type of volatile need for a woman. Even though he’s traumatised and grieving the deaths of his brother and nephew he can’t resist the urge to overtake Sophie – and her willing submission makes him want her all the more.
But danger is lurking close by, and if Thomas can’t face the demons of his past, he and Sophie could find themselves the next victims in a pattern of meaningless violence spiralling around them…
What I thought:
I have to say though, the first few chapters left me feeling a little cold. Things escalate very quickly at the start of the book and with very little knowledge of the characters personality or emotions and without much tension or build up, the first erotic scene left me feeling like something was missing. I was further distracted by the use of certain words to describe body parts. I guess I thought it was a little too ‘flowery’. I put the book down thinking I would come back to it at a later date, but was not overly impressed so far.
A few days later I got back to reading Explosive and with a few more chapters devoured, I discovered that I was suddenly enjoying this story. In fact, I no longer wanted to put the book down. As the characters grew in depth and I became more aware of the reasons behind the very sudden start to the book, I was completely engrossed. It all started to make sense. The sex scenes were animalistic, raw, and taut with tension, lust and sacrifice. The flowery imagery that I had picked up on at the start of the book was gone. The scenes were extremely sexy and written so well that I could picture it perfectly in my mind. Heck, they sounded so good I was fantasising about those very scenes later on that evening. Now THAT is what I want from an erotic story. I loved how the author managed to portray these potent sex scenes that have more to do with passion and lust, yet you could feel the characters being pulled together, growing closer and falling in love, despite the rocky situation they were in.
Explosive is not just an erotic story though. It has mystery, secrets and in parts I would even describe it as a thriller. The story is very strong too. The story is not just fluff or filler between the sex scenes, but a detailed mystery that untangles throughout the story. It is a true whodunit that leaves you guessing until the end.
Explosive is a fabulous erotic romance combined with a mystery and intrigue and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all fans of erotica.
