Bondage Man UV Hot Wax Play Bondage Candles Review

Bondage Man UV Hot Wax Play Bondage Candles Review, July 2021

I was casually browsing through the range of new products at Lovehoney when I spotted the Bondage Man UV Wax Play Candles.

Having reviewed so many sex toys, it takes a lot for a product to truly excite me, but these candles did just that. Designed to glow under black light, they offered a new take on an old idea.

They would allow us to get extra creative during our wax play sessions, experimenting with the colours and the lighting in the hopes of capturing some amazing photographs.

My mind was already racing with possibilities. I added the candles to my wish list and was thrilled when Lovehoney offered to send me a pack for review.

A Note Before We Begin

Sometimes you have to make additional purchases to get the most from your new toy and this is one instance where that is true.

Before the candles arrived, I went shopping for a black light. You don’t have to own a black light in order to use these candles; you can still enjoy wax play sessions without.

However, the black light is definitely needed if you want to see the colours glowing brightly on the skin. Under normal lighting, the wax has a pastel colouration (see my pictures), which looks nice but isn’t that much different from standard wax play candles (which are generally cheaper to purchase).

Thankfully, you can pick up a decent black light torch for under £10 online (It’s what I used to capture my photographs).

Our Experiences with the Bondage Man Candles

As soon as the candles (and the black light) arrived, we grabbed the camera and began experimenting. Since the candles look normal under standard lighting (the colours are bright, but they don’t glow) we waited until night time to test them properly.

With the main light turned off and the black light switched on, the candles glowed brightly. I had half expected the UV thing to be a bit of a gimmick, but I was super impressed at how vivid the colours were. It was like looking at three neon glow sticks.

I asked my partner to get naked and lit the candles. Before pouring the wax, I recommend turning on the main light so you can see what you are doing. The Bondage Man candles burn at a lower temperature than standard candles, but at a higher temperature than massage candles.

Because of this, you want to avoid holding the candles too close to the skin. You also want to avoid pouring hot wax onto highly sensitive/very hairy areas of the body, so being able to see what you are doing is important at this stage.

I decided to use all three candles; splashing and dribbling the wax all over his back and buttocks until I had created various patterns. When I was satisfied with my design (and by this time, he was reaching his limits), I blew out the candles, switched the main light off and shone the black light over his skin.

The room was dark and under the diffuse blue glow of the black light I had trouble making out the shape of his body. Then the light danced across his back and the colours glowed brightly, highlighting his shape in the blackness.

The wax highlighted the curve of his buttocks and the arch of his back. It was like looking at an abstract painting of the human form…in neon colours….in the dark. It was amazing.

Since he couldn’t see the wax on his back (and I hadn’t experienced the sensations) we decided to swap positions so that he could pour the wax onto my skin. Since I have a higher pain threshold than he does, our experiences differed slightly.

The wax does sting when it initially hits the skin, but this sensation fades within seconds. I would compare it to getting spanked; you experience a sharp pain on impact, but this fades quickly into a warm, tingly glow.

When pouring the wax, you do have some control over the intensity of the sensations. When you hold the candle at a distance, the wax has more time to cool as it falls towards the skin.

The closer you are, the hotter it will be and the stingier it will feel. It is best to start as high as possible and gradually reduce the distance, so you can get a feel for your partner’s limits. I also recommend testing them on yourself first, to get an idea what they feel like before using them on others.

The Downsides

Playing with the Bondage Man candles is a lot of fun, but clean-up can be a total pain (figuratively and literally). Because the wax is made from soya, it doesn’t dry hard on the skin. When warm, it has a little bit of softness to it, so you can roll it into a ball and squish it under your fingertips. It isn’t as soft as putty but it does have a tendency to crumble when cool.

Because it crumbles easily, you can feel it peeling and crumbling off your skin when you move around. If you decide to walk around the house, you will find little crumbs of wax everywhere. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend wearing it to parties or raves. It doesn’t look as cool when it starts to peel and it is a nightmare to remove from clothing and carpets (when it gets slightly warm, it tends to squish right into the fibres).

Conversely, removing the wax that remains on your skin can be a time-consuming (and sometimes painful) task. Because the wax is soft, you should avoid using your fingernails to scratch it off. Instead of flaking off, it will clump and clog beneath your fingernails. It is best to scrape the wax from the skin using a flat, blunt instrument like a butter knife. Hopefully, you don’t have too much wax on particularly hairy areas of the body. If you do, be prepared to experience a whole other kind of waxing!

If I could change one thing about the Bondage Man candles, it would be their shape. Because they are quite chunky, the wax doesn’t get melted evenly. The flame will melt the wax that surrounds the wick, but the edges of the candle remain un-melted. You can reduce this problem by tilting and rotating the candle during use so that the flame hits the edges of the candle. It isn’t ideal though and I believe some wax will remain by the time the wick burns out.

Summary

I absolutely love the Bondage Man candles; so much so, I will be purchasing another box when these ones run out. They can be messy and clean-up is a nightmare, but that’s to be expected with this type of play. If you enjoy wax play (or are considering it for the first time) and you fancy something a little bit different, I would recommend the Bondage Man candles. We certainly had a lot of fun playing with them.

One final bit of advice; if you do decide to purchase a black light, avoid shining that light around your house. Trust me, ignorance IS bliss!
